The driver’s seat can be positioned to accommodate drivers 5-foot-2 to 6-foot-8.Īlas, the Slingshot is a motorcycle. They are slotted to allow water to drain rather than pool at inhabitants’ feet. Made from rubberized plastic, similar to a side-by-side, and designed to withstand inclement weather, they are nevertheless comfortable enough for the task.Įven the floor panels have rain in mind. I was driving the $23,999 SL version which is enhanced with automotive amenities such as a back-up camera, stereo and touch screen – all of which are waterproof because the Slingshot lacks a roof. Starting at $19,999, the Slingshot is available in two versions that are mechanically identical. The few times I went into a corner too hot, I found it easier to correct course quickly because the rear wheel worked as a sort of pivot. The key difference: There is only one rear wheel, and it’s driven with a carbon fiber belt. Like a sports car, it is rear-wheel driven. It rides on low-profile, auto-style tires designed specifically for the Slingshot, the treads of which aren’t rounded for cornering as they are on a motorcycle, but squared for traction that is enhanced with a sport-tuned double wishbone suspension and sway bar equipped with even more car-like attributes, such as electronic stability and traction controls. Let Go.” It begs to be driven like Batman on a mission.Īt 1,743 pounds wet, the Slingshot weighs twice as much as a typical Harley cruiser but half as much as a sports car, which is a more apt comparison. Low-slung, wide-set and more angular than a complex polygon, the Slingshot has an aggro stance that isn’t mere posturing, as I learned in my day behind the wheel of the vehicle Polaris is promoting with the tag line: “Hold On. Just looking at the Slingshot got me giddy. Reverse engineered from the premise that existing three-wheelers lacked a certain joie de vivre, the company best known for snowmobiles, rugged off-roaders and, most recently, the rebirth of Indian Motorcycles, has designed an exhilarating yet affordable toy that combines the best attributes of sports cars and motorbikes. Even the engine is from an automaker: Its 2.4-liter inline four comes courtesy of General Motors. Registered as a motorcycle, it drives like a car – with a steering wheel, accelerator and brake pedals, and a five-speed manual transmission complete with a reverse gear. The Slingshot defies easy categorization. Faster than a speeding bullet! More powerful than a locomotive! Able to leap tall buildings in a single bound! It is neither a bird, nor a plane, but it is most definitely a strange visitor from another land – in this case, the state of Minnesota and its powersports powerhouse, Polaris. This month, just as motorcyclists across the country are draining their bikes’ fuel tanks and storing them for the winter, a pair of new three-wheelers have taken to the streets, simultaneously capitalizing on the open-air experience of motorcycling while subverting the need to lean. Either the Joker’s taken over the Department of Motor Vehicles, or three-wheeled motorcycles are here to stay.

Adult male black rhinos can be quite territorial and may battle to the death.Īlthough the rhinos within a given area may not see or socialize with each other much, they use communal dung heaps that act as message boards. The white rhino is by far the most social species, often seen in small communal herds of 5 to 10 individuals, and it is believed that loss of territory is forcing them to become more and more tolerant of each other.īlack rhinos are far less gregarious, and are also the most pugnacious of the rhino species. During the hottest seasons, they will feed mostly at night, and rest and wallow in the heat of the day. They are both nocturnal and diurnal, being most active at dawn and dusk, and alternating a few hours each of feeding and resting throughout the day and night. Rhinoceroses spend over 12 hours a day foraging and grazing across their territory. Usually forming in the region of skin behind the front legs, rhino sores are parasitic infestations of tiny worms living just below the skin. The black rhinoceros is particularly prone to inflamed red areas of skin called "rhino sores". It can be an inch thick in some areas to protect them from battles with other rhinos, but it is actually very soft, and subject to sores and sunburn. Wet areas also supply them with muddy banks that they will wallow and bathe in, coating their sensitive skin with mud as protection from heat and insect bites. Because of their size they require a home range of about 5 square miles that is rich in resources.Ībundant vegetation is vital to survival, but unlike many African animals who regularly go for many days without drinking, the water from the plants rhinos eat is not sufficient for them, and they will visit watering holes multiple times a day, drinking heartily.ĭuring drought, they may have to walk up to ten miles between their water source and their food source. The white rhinoceros and the black rhinoceros live in small pockets of grasslands on the floodplains of Southern and Eastern Africa. Wallowing in mud is somewhat of a social event as well, and favorite spots may attract large numbers of rhinos at a time, but generally, they are not gregarious. Small social groups do form, consisting of females and their young, or young males banding together, and herds of as many as 30 individuals may be created near water sources during drought conditions. They are mostly solitary, especially when feeding, since their food intake of 40 to 80 pounds of vegetation a day, requires them to spread out. The rhinoceros is strictly vegetarian, grazing on grasses or browsing trees and shrubs for leaves, shoots and fruits. The Asian rhinos in particular, are shy, reclusive, and even timid. In comparison, fatalities from elephant attacks number 400 to 500 a year, and hippos kill about 2,900 people annually! Rhinos are intimidating looking creatures, and will charge when confronted or threatened, but they are not generally aggressive towards humans, and only 2 or 3 attacks are reported a year. These horns are made of keratin, like human nails, and grow out of the skin in a similar fashion. The white, black and Javan rhinos have two horns, while the Indian (also known as the greater one-horned) and Sumatran, (also known as the hairy rhinoceros), have one. The word rhinoceros basically means "nose horn" in Latin. They have massive, low-slung heads that feature unusually forward eye placement, and long, sharp, dramatic looking horns. The African rhinos can be 6 feet tall at the shoulder and average about 3000 pounds. The term "white" stems from a misinterpretation of the word "wide" describing the shape of the white rhinos mouth, and the black rhino is so called because it is often the color of the mud it covers itself with. The most familiar rhinoceros species are the black rhino and the white rhino, but both of these animals are actually grey in color. All rhino species are endangered, except for one subspecies of white rhino, which has recently been brought back from the brink of extinction. There are 5 species of rhinoceros, 3 living in Asia, and 2 in Africa. These animals have remained unchanged for thousands of years, so the resemblance to dinosaurs like triceratops is intriguing, but their closest relatives are actually tapirs and horses. Each individual toe ends in a hoof, which leave a footprint that looks like the Ace of clubs. The mass is supported by short, stout legs and wide feet that have three both front and rear. The next portion of this update is to let you know what we have planned next and we will be announcing a KickStarter under Digital Dream Labs in the next month or two. Therefore, if you were concerned about Vector 'dying' one day, you no longer have to worry! The most important part of this update is to let you know we have taken over the cloud servers and are going to maintain them going forward. I wanted to let you know that we have purchased Anki's assets and intend to restore the entire platform and continue to develop the robot we all know and love, Vector! Over the weekend, a new post on the Vector Kickstarter page (the campaign happened in 2018) from Digital Dream Labs CEO Jacob Hanchar announced that not only will Vector’s cloud servers keep running indefinitely, but that the next few months will see a new Kickstarter to add new features and future-proofing to Vectors everywhere. Despite some vague promises (more like hopes, really) from Anki at the time that their cloud-dependent robots would continue to operate, it was pretty clear that Anki’s robots wouldn’t have much of a future-at best, they’d continue to work only as long as there was money to support the cloud servers that gave them their spark of life.Ī few weeks ago, The Robot Report reported that Anki’s intellectual property (patents, trademarks, and data) was acquired by Digital Dream Labs, an education tech startup based in Pittsburgh. Usually, abrupt shutdowns don’t end well, with assets and intellectual property getting liquidated and effectively disappearing forever. When Anki abruptly shut down in April of last year, things looked bleak for Vector, Cozmo, and the Overdrive little racing cars. The award will also fund significant infrastructure investment at BAE Systems’ site in Barrow-in-Furness, investment in its supply chain and recruitment of a more than 5,000 people.” Grant Shapps, Defence Secretary, said: Manufacture will start towards the end of the decade with the first SSN-AUKUS boat due to be delivered in the late 2030s. Having started early design work in 2021, the £3.95bn funding will cover development work to 2028, enabling BAE Systems to move into the detailed design phase of the programme and begin to procure long-lead items. This will eventually see Australia and the UK operate SSN-AUKUS submarines, which will be based on the UK’s next generation design, incorporating technology from all three nations, including cutting-edge US submarine technologies. “The funding follows the AUKUS announcement in March by the leaders of Australia, the UK and the United States. SSN-AUKUS will be the largest, most powerful and most advanced attack submarine the Royal Navy has ever operated and will eventually replace the Astute class, which BAE Systems builds at its site in Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria. The Ministry of Defence has awarded £3.95 billion of funding to BAE Systems for the next phase of the UK’s next-generation nuclear-powered attack submarine programme, known as SSN-AUKUS. The CFP is a significant achievement but it’s not a silver bullet. Jacklin gives the example of Gothard weir on the River Dove, which the Wild Trout Trust removed in September 2018 at a cost of just £15,000. It all requires technology, infrastructure and therefore expense well beyond what reinstating fish passage on a less complicated bit of river might entail. Then there are the factors relating to the migrating fish themselves: different species need varying flow rates depending on their anatomy and swimming ability. There are the location constraints: diverting water through the fish pass must not lower the flow through either the canoe slalom course at the adjoining Holme Pierrepont National Watersports Centre or the turbines of a local hydropower operation the EA also needs maintenance access to Holme Sluices. The EA began conducting feasibility studies for the fish pass back in 2013, but it wasn’t until January 2022 that construction began because of the sheer scale and complexity of the project. A fish pass used by eels, trout and salmon on the Whitendale River, Lancashire. ‘We figured something needed to be done but we didn’t have the resources.’ Fast forward more than 40 years and Ward, now on the cusp of retirement, is delighted to be overseeing the completion of a project that finally solves a problem that he first encountered at the start of his career. It was the first time they’d been seen in the river for many, many decades,’ he recalls. Ward had his eye on a fish pass at Colwick back in the 1970s, when he first became aware of salmon returning to the Trent. The CFP has been a long time in the making. If there’s more energy when they reach the spawning grounds, they can produce more eggs and the spawning will be more efficient, more productive.’ ‘The improvements to the spawning in the Derwent and the Dove and all those tributaries will increase manyfold because we can get fish past Nottingham very quickly. The new pass at Holme Sluices in Colwick will make a big difference, says Ward. All migratory fish are getting to that point and getting stuck.’ The Dove and the Derwent are stunning rivers and they should be really good salmon rivers – the gravel’s there and the habitat’s there. The weirs on the lower Trent, including Holme Sluices, are only passable by migratory fish in very specific flow conditions and this ‘knackers the rest of the Trent. However, man-made barriers remain problematic, explains Scott McKenzie, senior catchment manager at the Trent Rivers Trust. The construction of England’s biggest fish pass at Holme Sluices. The salmon population there is now regarded as self-sustaining, says Jacklin. Small numbers were recorded in the lower Trent in the 1970s, ’80s and ’90s, and the population was bolstered by reintroductions between 19. Water quality improved during the second half of the 20th century, enough that salmon started to bounce back. Historical data on migratory fish are patchy, but net catch records for the Trent are illustrative of the decline: from around 3,000 salmon a year in the 1880s to just six in 1960. ‘Salmon were made extinct by pollution, but they were already on the decline because of the lack of access to their spawning areas from all the barriers,’ Jacklin continues. Pollution from the industrial centres of Stoke-on-Trent and Birmingham poured downriver until it reached the 80-kilometre tideway, where it was washed to and fro, with disastrous effects. ‘I know we’ve got a pollution scandal going on at the moment, but on the Trent, when you look back into history, today is nothing,’ says Tim Jacklin, a Wild Trout Trust conservation officer with decades of experience in the Trent catchment. The weirs on the lower Trent are only passable by migratory fish in very limited flow conditions. Some fish were able to overcome these barriers – whether by leaping over or wriggling through what were often imperfect constructions of stone or wood – but these tenacious individuals were then beset by a further challenge: appallingly high levels of water pollution, both chemical and thermal. Holme Sluices was built in the 1950s, but the decline of migratory fish in the Trent catchment dates back to the Industrial Revolution, when large weirs were first built to open up the river for trade. ‘There are all sorts of issues with salmon – exploitation at sea, predation, disease – but we’re fixing one here on the Trent,’ says Simon Ward, a fisheries technical specialist with the EA. After squeezing the negative between the masks, blow some air on the both sides of it to clean any possible dust particles. I will write more about Moiré effect soon.ĭon’t touch the negative with your bare fingers as they leave grease on it and may ruin it. If needed, you may use also glass plates in the negative carrier, but make sure that at least one of the glasses is so called Anti-Newton glass, to avoid the unwanted Moiré effect. If the masks are too big, the negative will curl and the resulting image is out of focus in one end. When the contrasts in the negative are strong, the subtle greys in between are missing and getting the wide tonal range in the print is hard.Ĭhoose the negative masks in your carrier for your enlarger machine according to your negative size. The main rule is that the bright and strong light, like midday sun or flash, makes the negative hard to print in the darkroom as the contrasts are so strong. I will write a whole different text soon about choosing the negative. Some negatives are easy to print, some extremely hard. The first step to succeed in making a gelatin silver print is to choose the right negative to print. Often it’s easier to be creative if you know the basics well. However these steps I’ve gathered to help a darkroom printer in early stages of their career. You’re welcome to use all your creative and innovative power in the wonderful art of darkroom, without any strains or weight of any traditions. So if you’ve learned differently, that’s more than fine. Every darkroom printer also has their own ways of doing things. Gelatin silver prints may be done in many different ways and with many different looks. The basic standards include a wide tonal range and good contrasts, small grain and airy, bright light end, as well as the strong but not completely stuck blacks. They are based on fine art printing tradition, which means that the aim of the print is to achieve a print valued by those standards. The steps below are based on my own twenty+ years experience in the art of gelatin silver printing and on some remarks from the older masters. In Helsinki chemicals and papers may be bought from Interfoto, Fotoyks at Fredrikinkatu and Telefoto. Webshops Fotoimpex and Makodirect sell good quality black and white chemicals online. The selection is again larger than what it was in the first decade of 21st century. I warmly recommend to look for and try out materials from many different manufacturers to find your favourites. The stages depend also on the paper and the chemicals used. gelatin silver printing process consists of several different stages. Rear view of cathedral, photograph by William Henry Fox Talbot, about 1858, England. This was the direct forerunner of the photogravure process. Nature made the faithful original photographic drawing, but, in the final prints, carbon-based ink relied on nothing light-sensitive and preserved the original image for posterity. A glass photographic positive was put over the sensitized plate and used to make the image. The addition of screens or other graining allowed Talbot to devise his second process, which had a much wider tonal range. With etching complete, the gelatin was removed and the plate could then be printed. The unhardened areas were then washed off and the plate etched in acid. Exposure to daylight hardened the areas not covered by the object. The object to be depicted, such as a leaf or piece of fabric, was placed on top. At first, a copper or steel plate was coated with a gelatin solution made light-sensitive with potassium bichromate. The first was patented by William Henry Fox Talbot in 1852, and the second by him in 1858. These are methods of photographically producing copper or steel printing plates that can then be used in a conventional press. Le Christ portant sa croix, photograph by Joseph Nicéphore Niépce, about 1827, France. Niépce also experimented with the plates inside a camera, producing the earliest known surviving photograph made in a camera, View from the Window at Le Gras (1826 or 1827). Recent technical analysis of the Niépce plates in the Victoria and Albert Museum has revealed the use of another light-solidified material, which resembles the resin obtained when heating lavender oil, and a range of levels of etching and hand-tooling over the plates. It was then ready for inking and printing. The plate was washed with a solvent, which removed the unexposed areas, and etched in acid. Its rays hardened the bitumen under the light areas of the image. Taking an existing engraving on paper, he waxed it to make it translucent and placed it on the plate in the sun. Joseph Nicéphore Niépce invented this process in which he first coated a pewter plate with light-sensitive Bitumen of Judea (asphaltum). |
